FEDERAL TAX INFORMATION
Updated October 12, 2026. This bilingual summary covers confirmed 2026 tax-year amounts that generally apply to returns filed in 2027, plus selected rules already scheduled or proposed for tax year 2027.
Updated October 5, 2026For comparison purposes, these are the basic standard deduction amounts for tax years 2024, 2025, and 2026. Different rules or amounts may apply if a taxpayer is age 65 or older, blind, claimed as a dependent, or subject to other filing limitations.
The seven rates remain 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%. For single filers, the 37% bracket begins above $640,600; for married couples filing jointly, it begins above $768,700. Lower bracket thresholds also increased for inflation.
For January 1 through June 30, 2026, the business rate is 72.5¢ per mile and the medical/moving rate is 20.5¢. For July 1 through December 31, the IRS revised those rates to 76¢ for business and 23.5¢ for medical or qualifying moving use. The charitable rate remains 14¢ all year.
The employee contribution limit for 401(k), 403(b), governmental 457 plans, and the federal TSP is $24,500. The IRA limit is $7,500. The general age-50 catch-up is $8,000 for most workplace plans and $1,100 for IRAs; special higher limits can apply at ages 60–63.
The maximum EITC is $8,231 for eligible taxpayers with three or more qualifying children. The maximum adoption credit is $17,670, including up to $5,120 that may be refundable. Eligibility and phaseouts depend on each taxpayer’s facts and income.
No broad new ITIN filing rule for the 2027 filing season has been announced. A confirmed rule effective June 1, 2026 requires certain Exception 1(a) partnership applicants to include the partnership or LLC agreement information and supporting EIN documentation described by the IRS.
Eligible workers may deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips. The deduction phases out above $150,000 of modified adjusted gross income ($300,000 for joint filers) and has occupation, reporting, and identification requirements.
Eligible workers may deduct the overtime premium portion of qualified overtime pay—up to $12,500 ($25,000 for joint filers). Income phaseouts and reporting requirements apply.
Eligible taxpayers may deduct up to $10,000 of interest on certain loans for new, personal-use vehicles with final assembly in the United States. Income limits and documentation rules apply.
Eligible people age 65 or older may claim an additional $6,000 deduction per person. It phases out above $75,000 of modified adjusted gross income ($150,000 for joint filers).
Eligible accounts may receive a $1,000 federal contribution for qualifying children. Annual individual and employer contribution limits and other account rules apply.
Starting with 2027 retirement contributions, eligible low- and moderate-income taxpayers may receive a federal match of up to 50% of the first $2,000 contributed—up to $1,000 per person. The full-match MAGI limits are $41,000 for joint filers, $30,750 for heads of household, and $20,500 for other filers; the match phases out above those amounts. It is claimed on Form 8880-A with the 2027 return filed in 2028 and is generally deposited into a designated retirement account. Notice 2026-48 describes rules the IRS intends to include in forthcoming proposed regulations.
A refundable portion of the adoption credit remains available and is adjusted for inflation. The exact 2027 amounts have not yet been released.
Certain telehealth services, bronze and catastrophic health plans, and qualifying direct primary care arrangements receive expanded HSA treatment under rules already effective before 2027.
For tax years after 2025, the limit on repayment of excess advance Premium Tax Credit was removed. Taxpayers may need to repay the full excess amount when filing.
On October 1, 2026, Treasury and the IRS issued proposed regulations for a new credit for qualifying cash contributions to eligible Scholarship Granting Organizations in participating states. The proposed maximum is $1,700 per eligible taxpayer, or up to $3,400 on a joint return. Taxpayers may rely on the proposed rules for qualifying contributions beginning January 1, 2027. This is a tax-year 2027 provision generally claimed on a return filed in 2028—not on a 2026 return filed during the 2027 filing season. State participation and other requirements apply, and the regulations are not yet final.
Notice 2026-63 postpones many federal filing and payment deadlines occurring from September 30, 2026, through September 30, 2027, until September 30, 2027, for eligible affected individuals and businesses in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza and certain other qualifying taxpayers. This is targeted relief and is not a general extension for all taxpayers.
The IRS is retiring the FIRE system after its November 2026 maintenance window. Beginning January 1, 2027, IRIS will be the only IRS electronic intake system for information returns—including current-year, prior-year, and corrected returns. Current FIRE users should apply for an IRIS Transmitter Control Code and prepare to use IRIS for 2026 Forms 1099 and other covered information returns filed in 2027. The announced FIRE deadlines include November 1, 2026 for test submissions, November 9 for certain TCC application changes, and November 19 at 3 p.m. Eastern for production submissions.
This page covers major federal individual provisions, not every federal, state, local, or business tax rule. Tax law and IRS guidance can change. Eligibility depends on your complete facts and records; contact Speedys for advice about your situation.
